Hackathon on Public Contracting (Public Procurement) in Nepal: How did Open Contracting Data Standards (OCDS) contribute?

Follow original post here .  Kathmandu saw an overwhelming crowd of data enthusiasts mainly comprising up of the young students and change makers coming forward to participate in the  Open Data Day Hackathon  on February 25, 2017. Participants divided themselves into 10 different groups with interesting names as well as energy. Public procurement  was one of the themes that the challenges were framed from. Public procurement (public contracting) constitutes the largest portion of government spending in Nepal as with any other country in the world. So, the participants were encouraged to pick this important issue to develop innovative tools making use of data that exists. Mr. Manish Bhattarai, IT Director of Public Procurement Monitoring Office spoke about the data that exist in Nepal in terms of public contracting. Follow the original post here .  Happy Shivaratri ! Open Data Day 2016 (ODD 2016) event in Kathmandu  has still caught me in. Even though I was more supposed to look after the logistic arrangement, I could be found attending the activities during the day. ‘Techies’ from my lens, had been the persons with beards, long hair, earpiece and more ‘Bindaas’ compared to others. But when they started talking and presenting about ‘solving real problems’, I was more than amazed. I have had involved into a pretty sum of events to discuss on solving problems. This is the first event, I have witnessed where ‘techies’ were working onto innovate in solving ‘real’ problems of Nepal. The ‘real’ problems of Nepal such as overpricing, fatal diseases, non-disclosure of development projects, unemployment, health care responses and so on if are thought of seriously for their remedies by the ‘techies’. Introduction Society can be viewed from many ways. The viewpoints of the society vary from person to person according to their value relating to the subjects [1] . Some see society as the as a particular form and try to investigate how it gained such a particular form that acts as the organism in which all of its parts have contributions on their own place so as to regulate the whole system. They give importance to the values, norms, culture of the society. Some see the society as the place where constant conflict takes place. The constructive conflict within individuals in their interests and ideas result to the development of society more than it is today. Some, on the other hand, think society as the place which came into existence by continuous interactions among people regarding various matters.
